Dress Shirts Buying Guide
It may seem like most of Western society has moved into more casual apparel, and away from dress shirts, the truth of the matter is that these shirts are more important than ever. Everyone is going to need one of these shirts at some point in their lives. It may be for professional purposes, it may be for attending a wedding or a funeral, or it may be just for a fancy dinner party. Regardless of how it’s used, it’s important that everyone is prepared by having at least a couple of them in their closet.
Buying a dress shirt isn’t always as straight forward as it may seem, however. It requires the person wearing it to make some serious decisions about it. They are going to have to figure out how it’s going to be used, what materials they want it to be made from, and what style shirt they prefer. Oh, and they’re also going to have to know their size. As a result, we’ve listed some steps each person needs to take before buying a new dress shirt.
Determine Your Shirt’s Size
The first thing that any prospective dress shirt buyer is going to want to consider is their size. And although you may think that you know your size, it’s often best to measure yourself again if you haven’t done so in a while. Below is how to do it.
Measure For Neck Size
- Measure your neck’s circumference around where the shirt’s collar is going to sit.
- Add 1/4-inch to your measurement to allow for proper breathing room.
- Write this number down: It’s your neck size.
Measure For Sleeve Size
- Now measure your arms starting at your neck’s nape and measuring down to the wrist.
- Round this measurement up or down to the nearest inch.
- Write this number down. It’s your sleeve size.
These two numbers will appear prominently on your dress shirt packaging. The first number listed on the package is going to be the collar size and the second number is likely to a range. For example, a shirt package may have the size listed as 16-34/35. The 16 indicates a 16-inch neck circumference and the 34/35 represents an arm’s length of 34-inches to 35-inches.
Choose A Collar Style
Now, that you know your accurate shirt size, it’s time to select your collar style. As you may already know by perusing the men’s shirt isle of your favorite retailer or looking at online listings, there are quite a few different types of collar styles. However, there’s probably not as many as you may think. In all actuality, there are only 7 important collar styles to really consider. Below are some of the major ones.
- Point Collar: The basic turn-down collar.
- Tab Collar: A point collar that’s held closed using tabs. Designed for use with ties.
- Button-Down Collar: Casual shirt style
- Pin Collar: A point collar closed with a metal pin. Designed for use with ties.
- Spread Collar: A dress collar with points more than ninety degrees apart.
- Mandarin Collar: A stiff collar that doesn’t turn down.
- Club Collar: A rounded collar.
Choose A Dress Shirt Fabric
Now let’s turn our attention to what the dress shirt is made out of. Unlike other types of shirts, there’s a wide variety of fabrics to choose from when purchasing a new dress shirt. Let’s examine a couple of these to determine what to look for when buying one of these shirts.
- Herringbone: Designed with distinctive V-shaped designs and a textured weave.
- Oxford: A basic and durable weave suitable for just about anything.
- Pinpoint: Also known as a Royal Oxford, this is a light Oxford.
- Seersucker: Casual, light and designed for summer-wear.
- Broadcloth: A high-quality and tight weave.
- Poplin: A smooth fabric that has a loose weave to it.
Choose The Cuff Style
Cuff styles are important, but perhaps they aren’t as important as the shirt’s material or the collar. Let’s take a look at some of the more popular cuff styles.
- Single Barrel Cuff: A plain cuff that buttons.
- Double Barrel Cuff: A style that features built-in buttons.
- Single French Cuff: A cuff that’s closed with cufflinks.
- Double French Cuff: A style that’s doubled over and closed with cufflinks.
Choose A Color
All that’s left is to choose a color for your dress shirt. Fortunately, these shirts are available in a virtual rainbow of different colors. There are Plain White shirts, Light Colored Solids, White Shirts With Stripes or Checkers and Brightly Colored Dress Shirts. Choose one that fits your style.
