Best Christmas Light Projectors Buying Guide
As you may be aware by now, LED light projectors require almost no installation and are a very time saving alternative to putting up traditional string lights. All you have to do is plug them into an outlet and enjoy the full benefits of a complex light show, full of all the coloring and intricate patterns that only large businesses were able to employ during the Holidays up until not so long ago. Even so, there are a few things to consider when shopping for a Christmas light projector, starting from the overall construction of the device and the technologies it employs.
Waterproofing
First of all, you must ensure that any light projector you’re thinking of buying is able to withstand the environmental conditions around it. If you’re planning on installing the projector outdoors, then it must be 100% waterproof and weatherproof to an acceptable standard. Considering that it might also have to withstand a bit of snow in the process, you also want to make sure that it isn’t likely to break down in cold weather.
Construction
Another thing to consider is the projector’s chassis material and overall construction. While obvious that metal projectors are bound to last longer than plastic ones, you might not need one to begin with if you’re living in an area with a temperate climate. With a plastic projector, you will end up saving a little money while still getting roughly the same projecting quality of high-end, metal projectors.
Coloring
You also want to learn about the projector’s coloring and the exact light potency it is capable of producing at any given time. Although you will be running the projector mostly at night, it couldn’t hurt for it to be powerful enough to handle the dim evening lighting for added effect. Interestingly enough, most Christmas light projectors operate red and green lighting patterns while high-end models usually contain yellow and blue (RGB) as well.
Laser patterns
The whole point of a Christmas light projector is to generate the type of patterns a regular string light assembly could not. In this regard, you want the projector to boast complex patterns with colors that move and morph with each other to generate quite a show. Depending on the model you buy, you may even have the ability to choose between tens or even hundreds of unique patterns to decorate your home.
What To Look For In A Christmas Light Projector
You shouldn’t judge Christmas light projectors based on their price alone, mind you, because not all projectors are built to the same standards. Depending on what you have in mind in terms of patterns and coloring, you might sometimes be better off with a low-end model that happens to boast the characteristics you desire. Even then, there are a few features to look for to guarantee that what you’re getting is worth the investment.
Remote operation
A good Christmas light projector should give you the possibility to control it remotely with relative ease. Even though many such projectors come with a remote, not all can be expected to have one, at least not in the low-budget range. Even then, some will enable you to control them from very far away (more than 50 yards) while others will only enable you to switch between settings from only a few feet away.
Versatility
You want a projector to run properly both indoors and outdoors with no limitations whatsoever. Unfortunately, a big number of projectors are built for either indoor or outdoor use, meaning that you will have to read up on each model’s capabilities before making a purchase.
The main problem with buying one that isn’t met for your particular setting is that the projector might get ruined by the weather outside if it’s designed to be used indoors or affected by the indoors temperature if designed to be used outdoors. Not only that but indoor projectors usually have a much shorter projection range than outdoors projectors.
What To Avoid In the Best Christmas Light Projectors
Battery operated projectors
Although great for improvising a light show, battery-operated Christmas projectors are temporary by nature, meaning that they aren’t likely to last you through the Holidays. If possible, stay as far away as you can from any projector that involves batteries or accumulators of any kind. Not only are these projectors destined to run out way before they’re intended to but they are also prone to breaking down for no particular reason. Then again, his should be expected from all cheap projectors.
Cheap models
Over these past few years, the market has been flooded with sub-par models, mostly from Asia and South America. Even though a projector shouldn’t be too expensive to begin with, beware of any projector that seems a bit too affordable given its advertised capabilities. Most of the time, these projectors aren’t fully weatherproof and will break down as soon as the weather takes a change for the worst.
Static projectors
Last but not least, you want a projector to generate complex light patterns, preferably in full motion. While static projectors are indeed cheaper overall, a static projection can get stale and boring after a while, which defeats the whole purpose of having a Christmas light projector to begin with.
Setting Up My Own Laser Christmas Lights This Year
After spending a considerable amount of time reviewing best Christmas laser lights and checking them out for practicality, ease-of-use, and cost-effectiveness, I decided to use one for my personal decorating needs. I had spent years fumbling around with ordinary outdoor Christmas lights and after checking them out for my reviews, I knew there had to be a better solution. That’s when I decided to use a set for my own home.
Of course, before I could set up a Christmas light projector there were two things that I needed to take into consideration. I needed to decide on the type of laser Christmas lights I was going to use and I also needed to decide where on my property to place it for the best effect.
Choosing My Christmas Laser Lights
As far as choosing a unit goes, I had an advantage over most people. After all, I had already reviewed 10 of the best ones available on the market, so it’s safe to say that I knew what to look for in one of these products. I knew that I wanted an indoor/outdoor unit that could handle normal weather and that I wanted one with a remote. I also knew what I didn’t want: a static projector and/or one that ran on batteries. With those things in mind, I choose the product I was going to use for the holidays.
I decided on the Geekers because it had everything I needed. It is dustproof and can withstand rain, sun and snow without any adverse effects. It also came with an IR remote and could be set up in a number of different ways. It could be set up with a number of hours of operation, at which point it will go into sleep mode or you can manually set up which hours out of the day that you want it to run.
Setting It Up
The next thing I had to consider was where to place it. This particular unit came with a screw-on stake, so I knew I wanted to find a place where I could just plant it into the dirt. However, that wasn’t the only consideration I needed to make. For an optimal laser light show, I knew I needed to set it up the appropriate distance from my house and to do that, I needed to know how many square feet of coverage I needed it to cover.
For instance, if you’re trying to cover a 900 sq. foot home, then you would place it approximately 15-feet away from your home. If you’re trying to cover 2100-square feet, then you need to place it approximately 20 to 25-feet from the house. For the size of my home, I decided to place it about 18-feet away. That distance covered my home without showering my neighbor’s home in laser light, too.
Best Christmas Light Projectors: In Conclusion
It was just as easy as that. A couple of minutes of my time and I had an amazing Christmas display that made me the envy of the neighborhood. All without having to worry about untangling holiday lights, getting up on step ladders or worrying about striking my thumb with a hammer.
