How To Apply Aftershave

Aftershaves were first introduced by barbers during the 19th century and they served a very important purpose. These products were designed to sanitize the customer’s skin after they have been shaved and to disinfect the barber’s equipment between customers to prevent infections from being transmitted from one person to the next.

Today, these products serve a very different purpose but they are still an extremely important part of any shaving routine. That’s because they not only refresh the skin but can some of them can temporarily tighten the user’s skin and are an important part of any shaving routine. And yes, many of these products still kill the bacteria that barbers were fighting against over a hundred years ago.

However, choosing the right aftershave is only half the battle, it’s also extremely important for the person to use the product properly for the best results. Unfortunately, far too many people don’t know how to use their aftershave properly to achieve the best results possible. That’s why we’ve decided to create this guide for how to properly use aftershave during your daily shave routine.

Step One: Wash Your Face

Shaving properly is the subject of another guide, so we’ll start this tutorial immediately after you have shaven. This is the time to make sure that your face is completely clear of any stray facial hairs or shaving cream. During this step, it’s important to thoroughly wash your face with nothing but clear, cold water. Be sure not to rub your skin too harshly, however. After all, you don’t want to irritate your sensitive skin, especially since it’s still sensitive from being shaved.

Step Two: Dry Your Face

Using your favorite towel, be sure to thoroughly dry off your face. To prevent chaffing, it’s advisable that a microfiber towel is used during this step, but any towel will do in a pinch. Be sure not to exert too much pressure while drying your face to prevent skin irritation.

Step Three: Prepare The Aftershave

Place two to three drops of your favorite aftershave into the palm of your hand. Don’t apply more than this or you’ll end up overapplying the product, which isn’t a good idea. Just a few drops are more than enough to do the job and leave your skin feeling fresh and smelling good.

Once it’s in the palm of your hand, however, don’t immediately slap it on your face. Instead, rub your palms together for a second or two. Just do it enough to get aftershave on both of your hands and not enough that your palms end up absorbing the aftershave.

Now, this is the part where you may want to jump immediately to applying the aftershave to your face. That’s not a good idea though. The proper thing to do is to let the aftershave sit on your hands for approximately 6-seconds before applying it to your face.

The point of letting the aftershave sit for 5 or 6-seconds on your skin is to allows some of the alcohol to evaporate from the product. Many aftershaves are loaded down with alcohol and alcohol has a tendency to dry out skin, so let the aftershave lotion just sit in your palms for just a few seconds. This is called letting the aftershave breathe, and it’s a crucial step to properly applying aftershave. Following this step will not only keep the alcohol from drying out your skin, but it will also eliminate much of the burning associated with using this product.

Step Four: Apply The Aftershave

Now it’s time to actually begin applying the product to your face. Using a gentle touch, massage the product slowly into your face’s skin. Be sure to use a downward motion while you’re applying the product and to not use too firm of a touch. You should begin at the top of the cheekbone and apply down to the jaw for best results. Once that’s done, massage the aftershave under your chin and over your neck. Linger for a second on each part of your face to be sure that your skin absorbs it.
